Following Michael Smith’s departure from Sheffield Wednesday, two teams who are on high alert are Middlesbrough and Wrexham.
After leaving Hillsborough, the attacker is reportedly being pursued by rivals in the Owls’ Championship.
Due to financial difficulties that have caused certain players to go unpaid for three of the last four months, Smith’s contract with the Yorkshire team was mutually ended.
The 33-year-old helped Danny Rohl’s team finish 12th in the league last season with eight goals and four assists.
Middlesbrough and Wrexham are interested in Michael Smith.
Given that Smith is now a free agent, it is thought that several Championship and League One clubs are evaluating an approach.
Middlesbrough and Wexham have both been mentioned as teams interested in the attacker.
Since Smith’s exit from Sheffield Wednesday will be confirmed on Thursday, it is still unclear what he would like.
Prior to the next campaign starting in a few weeks, he and Josh Windass will be looking to find a new team.
Following their first-ever promotion from League One under Phil Parkinson last season, Wrexham is preparing for life in the Championship.
Michael Carrick was fired as manager of Middlesbrough earlier this summer, and Rob Edwards is now in charge.
The departure of Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday
On Thursday night, Sheffield Wednesday released a statement confirming Smith’s departure from the team.
Windass also left, although the Yorkshire club acknowledged the forward for his achievements since he joined in the summer of 2022.
Through their official website, the Owls stated, “The current contracts of Michael Smith and Josh Windass have been terminated by mutual consent.”
“Both players depart Hillsborough right away.
Since joining in June 2022, Smith has made 127 appearances for the Owls, tallying 33 goals.
Windass joined Wednesday, initially on loan, in January 2020 and made 182 appearances, scoring 53 goals.
“Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Josh and Michael for their services and wish them continued success.”
Clubs ought to be encircling Smith.
Smith contributed to 12 goals for Sheffield Wednesday as they finished in 12th place last season, demonstrating that he is still more than capable of competing at the Championship level.
He would strengthen Middlesbrough’s attacking options and give Edwards’ team more depth, making him a good addition.
Given that their top target will be to just stay in the league for more than a year, Wrexham is more in need of a goal scorer with experience at this level.
