FEMI Azeez attributed his current string of goals to confidence in himself and his teammates, as well as a positional swap.

Since returning from injury earlier this month, Azeez has started four straight games at right wing, scoring in each.

The 24-year-old now has five goal contributions this season, only two less than his total from the previous season, when he primarily played on the left.

Azeez was asked following Millwall’s 1-0 victory over Leicester City what has driven his extraordinary improvement this season.

“I guess I’m playing on the right,” Azeez explained. “The manager mentioned it after I scored against West Brom. I’ve always played on both sides, but transitioning from left to right has changed the team dynamic.

Thierno [Ballo] is performing great on the left. We certainly have Billy [Mitchell], Casper [De Norre], and Derek [Mazou-Sacko], who are also doing fantastic work in the centre. Those four can find the passes for me and Mihailo [Ivanovic].

However, I believe it is simply a matter of confidence. I’ve returned from an injury. “I just want to do my best for this club.”

Azeez is presently in his second year with the Lions, having joined from League One side Reading in August 2024.

He believes that adjusting to the Championship and playing under Alex Neil helped him achieve his recent success. “Moving from Reading to Millwall was a huge step,” Azeez stated. “It takes several months to adjust to the Championship.

Isn’t the Championship a completely different ball game? Having a whole pre-season under my belt, training with the coach for six weeks straight, is obviously beneficial. Everything, including confidence, adds up.

“I’m in a good place right now, and I hope that continues. I am not going to get ahead of myself.

So I’ll simply maintain being consistent mentally.” Azeez’s goals have largely followed the same pattern: a ball over the top for the winger to chase down, beating his defender for pace before a powerful finish past a custodian trapped in no man’s land.

“It’s just knowing where I’m going to run, knowing how I’m going to outsmart the defender into thinking I’m going to be somewhere else when I’m not,” Azeez told the media.

“Having amazing players behind me to find that pass, I think it all adds and helps contribute towards the goal.”

When asked if they practiced that manoeuvre on the training ground, Azeez answered, “It’s natural for me.

I’ve done that throughout my career. “They always say that the run dictates the ball, right? So if I make the run, I’ll get the ball where I want it, in a sense.

Millwall’s current success in the final third is a significant improvement from the poor finishing that plagued them in the first two months of the season.

The Lions scored six goals in their first eight league games, one fewer than the seven they scored in their previous four.

Azeez believes his team’s increased ruthlessness has been instilled in the dressing room. “Being in and around the boys every day, working, helps shape my mentality,” Azeez told me.

“Also, because we did well last season but fell short at the final hurdle, we are determined to go better this season. “We all have that ruthless mentality right now.”
