More bollards to be added to city centre street.

Leicester will see the installation of a new set of automated safety bollards starting on Monday.

In order to expand the city’s central pedestrian zone, Leicester City Council will start construction on Granby Street.

According to the council, cars would not be able to access the pedestrianised area of Granby Street between Northampton Street and St Georges Way during the two-week project.

According to Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, the project was advanced “to help address concerns that businesses have raised about illegal and nuisance parking on this part of Granby Street” after initially being scheduled for next year.

The council verified that pedestrian access will be maintained during the work, and that all businesses will remain open as usual.

After the work is finished, all vehicles will have access to the pedestrian zone during designated hours for loading and unloading.

The city council stated that the new bollards would automatically drop when a vehicle approached, allowing entry between 05:00 and 11:00 Sunday through Friday, and 05:00 to 09:00 on Saturdays.

Outside of specified times, automatic bollards will be in place to prevent unauthorised cars from entering.

Whittle stated, “Work to install motorised bollards at other points throughout the city centre has already tightened vehicle access to the pedestrian zone.”

It is helping us to more effectively clamp down on those who abuse the system and continue to provide an environment for shopping and leisure activities where people can feel safe.”

Additional static bollards will be installed, but this will not affect access, according to the council.
