More than 100 arrested at Notting Hill Carnival.
According to the Metropolitan Police, over 100 people were arrested at the Notting Hill Carnival.
The force stated that 15 of the 140 arrests made during the annual west London festival were for allegedly assaulting officers, one of whom required hospital treatment for hand injuries.
Hundreds of thousands of people peacefully attended the Children’s Day Parade on Sunday, the funfair’s most colourful day, which celebrates Caribbean culture. An estimated two million people will attend on Sunday and Monday.
Dancers in bright costumes filled the streets as music played, and rows of stalls sold fragrant jerk chicken, curry goat and rum punch cocktails.
The majority of funfair attendees will recall Europe’s largest street party as a fun, family-friendly event. Police reported 105 arrests at the event, with 35 made nearby.
There were 52 drug-related arrests, including 21 for alleged possession of an offensive weapon, four for sexual offences, and two for robbery.
The Met stated that 13 of the arrests were made after the suspect was identified using live facial recognition technology, which was used at the funfair for the first time this year.
The specialised technology employs drones capable of identifying individuals from up to 80 meters (260 feet) away and transmitting images to officers.
The Met announced on Friday that it had arrested 100 people prior to the start of the funfair, with 21 of them being recalled to prison.
It also seized 11 firearms and over 40 knives. Approximately 7,000 officers will be deployed across the capital during the bank holiday weekend to police the funfair.
Music was paused at 15:00 on Sunday for a 72-second silence to honour the 72 people killed in the Grenfell Tower fire, as well as those who have died at the funfair in recent years and Kelso Cochrane, whose murder in 1959 sparked the event.
