Morishita takes Blackburn Rovers plaudits after Watford win.
Ryoya Morishita’s first goal won Blackburn Rovers a 1-0 victory at Watford, giving them back-to-back Championship away wins.
Valerien Ismael’s side rebounded to a setback before the international break with a well-deserved three points versus his previous club.
This follows their excellent 3-0 road victory over Hull City last month. Morishita won his first full match for Rovers. The Japanese attacker collected a brilliant flick from Yuki Ohashi and maintained his cool to score the winning goal.
The summer signing had previously hit the crossbar in the first half with a spinning shot from range. From Watford’s perspective, it slammed back off the woodwork and into safety.
Egil Selvik of Watford made a great save on Todd Cantwell as Rovers cranked the screw.
At halftime, the game was still up for grabs, with Watford not in contention. It only two minutes in the second half for Ismael’s team to capitalise. Morishita completed a beautiful team play by finding the corner.
Rovers held on relatively comfortably. Despite the Hornets’ efforts to find an equaliser, Balazs Toth was largely unknown. Watford began the encounter the brighter of the two teams, with Toth’s blushes spared early on due to a missed punch.
Despite controlling the ball, the Hornets failed to test Rovers’ custodian, and the visitors gradually gained control of the game.
Rovers came closest to scoring when Morishita’s shot dipped, spun, and rebounded off the crossbar. Ismael made three changes, including the Japanese forward, who nearly scored on his complete debut.
Blackburn continued to pose a threat and soon created another decent opportunity. Sidnei Tavares’ wonderful cross-field ball found Ryan Alebiosu, who crossed for Cantwell, forcing a fantastic stop from Selvik.
Ismael’s team continued to explore and apply pressure, but Watford posed a threat on the break. Mamadou Doumbia could have done better with a cutback inside the box, but he blasted over.
At halftime, the game felt like it could be won, and Rovers required less than two minutes to take the lead following the break.
Their two Japanese internationals connected up, with Ohashi flicking the ball into Morishita’s path, allowing him to find the corner.
It sent the away fans into raptures, as they were right behind the strike. Rovers controlled the game superbly, facing little more than pressure in the closing 30 minutes. They defended their box wonderfully, allowing the hosts very few chances.
They could have finished it off at the opposite end when Cantwell met Ryan Alebiosu’s cross, but his acrobatic effort was too late. It was insignificant as the points returned with them to Lancashire.
