Mosque plan for former rugby clubhouse approved

Mosque plan for former rugby clubhouse approved.

Plans to convert a former rugby clubhouse in Leicester into a mosque have been approved.

On Wednesday, members of Leicester City Council’s planning committee approved a request to turn the pavilion in Knighton Lane East, Aylestone, into a place of worship.

The structure was previously used by the Old Aylestonians Rugby Football Club, however it has been vacant for approximately eight years.

Some local residents expressed concerns to councillors about traffic safety if the building were reopened.

However, roads authorities at the city council stated that the site had adequate parking and that the idea was reasonable.

Dr. Louay Al-Alousi, who will be the imam at the new mosque, said officials would try to manage traffic and that many worshippers would walk or cycle to prayers rather than driving.

He stated that the mosque, which will also include educational facilities, will most likely have little more than 100 people on site at any given time.

He stated that he hoped it will be ready to open by February 2026.

The council received 163 comments in favour of the idea and 38 reservations. Among the issues were concerns about potential loudness.

A report produced for the committee stated that there was “no intention” of an externally amplified call to prayer, and planning officers proposed a stipulation that no formally scheduled events take place outside the building.

Council officers also requested that the location be utilised exclusively between 07:00 and 23:00, with opening hours extended to 00:30 during Ramadan.
