Despite concerns about anti-social behaviour, Dundee will not implement a fireworks ban for the second year in a row. Local authorities in Scotland were given new powers in 2023, allowing them to establish so-called firework control zones.
These would make laws illegal for any member of the public to set off fireworks in the designated places, including their own garden. Those who violate the restriction face a fine of up to £5,000 or six months in jail.
The expanded powers were enacted following the Kirkton riots the previous year, which saw fireworks thrown at police, several fires ignited, and St Paul’s RC Academy torn up.

Councils must accept requests for FCZs from local residents (25 signatures necessary), a welfare group, or a community council.
However, a freedom of information request conducted to Dundee City Council revealed that there are no current community petitions for a firework control zone.
This means that no FZC will be introduced in the city this year. The FOI also indicated that this would continue to be the case next year.
However, Dundee MSP Maurice Golden said it was “extremely disappointing” that no FCZs would be established and called for greater steps to be taken to make it easier for communities to request them.
“People and businesses in Dundee have had their lives made a misery by fireworks in recent years” , he commented. And police and other emergency services are seriously endangered throughout this dangerous period.”
