Norwich City transfers: Angus Gunn set for Premier League

Norwich City transfers: Angus Gunn set for Premier League.

Angus Gunn, who left Norwich City this summer, is set to return to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest.

The former Canaries custodian has been looking for a new club since being released following May’s final day victory over Cardiff at Carrow Road, and has held talks with several clubs, including Antalyaspor in Turkey.

However, widespread reports suggest that he has decided to join the Reds, providing competition in their goalkeeping department as he returns to the top flight for the first time in three years.

Forest first-choice and Belgian international Matz Sels won the division’s golden glove last season alongside Arsenal keeper David Raya, but Wayne Hennessey’s retirement has left Nuno Espirito Santo looking for depth between the sticks.

Gunn appears to be the answer to that pursuit, having ruled out a return to the Championship despite recent rumours of a move to West Brom.

The 29-year-old, who has 16 Scotland caps, was training as part of the PFA’s free agent pre-season just last month. He accompanied the group on a trip to a Champneys spa resort in Leicestershire, describing the experience as “even better” than at a club.

“It’s a great place to come and an opportunity,” he told me. “Obviously, everyone is in the same situation, so it’s a good idea to speak with all of the other guys and the staff as well.

“It’s a little bit different to just training on your own, so it’s definitely beneficial and it gives you a good platform to go into pre-season somewhere.” Forest’s league campaign begins on August 17 with a visit from Brentford.

They finished seventh last season, mounting a surprise challenge for the Champions League places following a blistering start.

Gunn played 172 games for Norwich over two senior spells, having also progressed through the club’s academy before joining Manchester City as a teenager.
