One in five Dundee city centre units lie empty as new figures reveal increase.
According to council data, 19.8% of all units in the city core remained unoccupied in 2024-25. The number of vacant units in Dundee’s city centre has climbed again, with new numbers revealing that one out of every five is empty.
According to council data, 19.8% of all units in the city core remained unoccupied in 2024-25.
This is higher than the 17.7% percentage reported in 2023/24. It is also higher than the data collected in 2022/23.
During this time, 18% of the apartments were left unoccupied. The most recent data were presented in a new report showing the progress made on the Council Plan 2022-2027.
This outlines the local authority’s primary aims and the ‘essential’ activities required to attain them.
One of the goals is to keep the total number of unoccupied flats in the city centre around 12.4%.
According to the update report, the council remains “committed” to bringing vacant units “back to life” in order to keep the city centre “vibrant”.
It goes on to say that the council is making “significant strides to improve public spaces,” including “pedestrian areas and green spaces to make the city centre more attractive.”
Vacancy rates a ‘challenge’ for council
Dundee City Council has previously stated that town vacancy rates remain a “challenge” for the local authorities.
The Courier reported in April on the Murraygate’s financial struggles, as the location with the greatest vacancy rate of any city centre shopping strip. Around a dozen units on the once-busy road are empty.
And, earlier this week, The Courier reported that over half of the Wellgate Centre’s units will be unoccupied after toy chain The Entertainer closes.
The shop takes up a significant space on the centre’s ground floor, flanked on either side by the massive empty former TJ Hughes/Smart Foods and Virgin Media stores.
The Entertainer is set to close on January 5, leaving 22 of the 46 premises in Wellgate Shopping Centre unoccupied.
