Park crossbow attacker jailed for 10 years

Park crossbow attacker jailed for 10 years.

A 53-year-old man who used a crossbow to shoot a man in the stomach in an Aberdeen park has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempted murder. Alan Bruce took the weapon and pursued Richard Murison, who had knocked on his door in the middle of the night.

He caught up with him at Eric Hendrie Park and shot him with a crossbow bolt, leaving him gravely injured, before fleeing the scene without checking if he required an ambulance.

Mr Muriuson, 44, required surgery for a punctured gall bladder and spent several days in hospital after the event in November 2023. Lord Renucci imprisoned Bruce in the High Court in Glasgow after telling him that only a severe imprisonment sentence was acceptable.

The previous trial heard how Bruce told Mr Murison, “You are going to regret this.” Mr Murison stated: “I heard a sound similar to a gust of wind, followed by a discomfort in my stomach.

“I fell to my knees.” Mr Murison later informed police that he feared he was about to die. His attacker was convicted following a trial at Aberdeen’s High Court.

According to defence attorney John Brannigan, Bruce had a long-standing drug problem that had ruined his life. Lord Renucci stated, “You decided to leave your house equipped with a loaded crossbow, pursue your victim, and intentionally shoot him with that crossbow.

“It is more by chance than judgement that you are not punished today for murder rather than attempted murder.

“After that, you simply turned around and returned to your home, abandoning your victim. Even though you were unsure of his injuries, you did not call for an ambulance.

‘Expressed remorse’

He stated that the author of a background report has since expressed some regret. “It’s clear that drugs played a part in this offence and unless you address your drug problems it’s not likely this will be the last sentence you receive,” the tribunal’s judge stated. He carried out the attempted murder while on bail.

The judge determined that six months of the 10-year sentence were related to the aggravation. Bruce was also convicted of carrying a shock gun disguised as a torch.

He was sentenced to five years for the other charge, with the sentences running concurrently.
