Petition launched to save building at beloved Coventry beauty spot.
It is temporarily closed due to safety concerns caused by an insecure roof.
Residents have requested that a services building used by boaters at a Coventry beauty spot be spared. Sutton Stop, Hawkesbury Junction, is famous for its lovely scenery and ancient bridges and houses.
As a result, it is a favourite destination for boaters, residents, and hikers, as well as drinkers and diners thanks to the neighbouring Greyhound bar. However, there is concern regarding the services facility located there, which has been closed to boats for some time.
A petition has been created online urging the Canal and River Trust (CRT), which operates the site, to restore the building and reopen it.
The trust has informed CoventryLive that it is closed due to work required to repair an unsafe roof, and that no preparations for the future have been established at this time.
The petition, started by Karen Spooner, reads: “This is an important resource for both boaters and people passing through Hawkesbury Junction, and it has an impact on the local economy and sense of community.
“The canal network is an important element of our heritage and lifestyle, and diminishing its functions can have far-reaching implications.
“Removing the building is neither a sustainable or community-oriented approach. Instead, CRT should prioritise appropriate management and maintenance in order to bring the services building back into full operation.
When asked for a statement, the Canal and River Trust Society said that “the building is currently closed due to an unsafe roof so we’ve had to close it for safety reasons” They also stated that the trust “has not made any decisions regarding the long-term future of the building” at this time.
