Plans for 16-bed HMO in Hartlepool’s Church Street are approved.
Despite reservations, plans for a new 16-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO) were approved.
Proposals had been submitted to Hartlepool Development Corporation (HDC) to convert the first, second, and third floors of 25-27 Church Street into housing spaces.
Mr. A Sewell’s application stated that the buildings have been “vacant for a number of years and are in a poor condition throughout”.
The HMO will have 16 bedrooms, six for single occupancy and ten for dual occupancy, all with private en-suite amenities, as well as a community kitchen.
A report from HDC officers affirmed the application’s approval, stating that the HMO accommodation is “intended for general let”.
According to the report: “The proposed HMO is located in a sustainable location within the town centre and provides appropriate uses which will secure the viable refurbishment and reuse of the upper floors of the building.”
The current entry to 26 Church Street will be reconfigured as a separate access door to the top floor HMO as part of the project.
The decision comes despite Councillor Corinne Male, who represents the Burn Valley ward, which includes Church Street, citing concerns about the “creation of yet another large HMO within this small area of town”.
She additionally stated: “There have been a large number of applications similar to this in the past year which is a very worrying development for this area.”
A planning and heritage statement supporting the proposals stated that the HMO would allow “anyone from Hartlepool and the local area to live on Church Street.” Details of public notices concerning Hartlepool are available online.
