Plans for city student flats given green light

Plans for city student flats given green light.

Plans for a complex of student residences in Leicester have been approved.

On Wednesday, Leicester City Council’s planning committee approved a design for 108 apartments on property between St Nicholas Circle and Bath Lane, across from the Holiday Inn hotel.

The decision means that three buildings, including the previous location of Brucciani’s bakery, will be razed to make place for the flats.

Concerns about the building’s scale and design, which will be seven floors high at its tallest point, were expressed during the meeting, but councillors voted eight to two in favour of the plan.

Committee member Patrick Kitterick criticised the block as “just so depressing” and without architectural vision.

He described the region as the “jewel of Leicester heritage” because of its proximity to the Roman Jewry Wall remnants and related museum, as well as other landmarks such as St Mary de Castro church.

Other councillors, however, said they admired the planned architecture and that the scheme will help rejuvenate the area near the River Soar, which already has a big number of tall student housing towers.

Councillor Kulwinder Singh Johal stated that the neighbourhood was undergoing a transition from its industrial background. He went further:

“That transformation has to continue.” Do we want to develop our city? “I would welcome that project every day of the week.” Councillors were informed that there could be “high-value” archaeology beneath the site.

Officers said a condition would be imposed on the planning permission, forcing the applicant to conduct a survey and record any findings before building began.

Nobody from the applicant, City Group Leicester Ltd, spoke at the meeting.
