Plans for new bar in Eastbourne approved by council.
Plans to turn an old photographic studio into an expensive pub have been approved.
Proposals were presented to turn the former Jane De Weck Photography into a pub that specialises on craft beer and cider.
The studio, located at 58 South Street in Eastbourne, will close in March 2025 after more than 20 years in business. Drublik Limited, a collaboration between Eastbourne brewer Route 21 and local cider producer Ascension, submitted the application.

The planning application stated, “The emphasis is on quality products, and we anticipate that this will attract older and more responsible customers.”
“We believe that this is a type of premises that the town is lacking, and believe it should be successful as well as enhancing the town in this category.”
Members of the public raised seven concerns to the ideas. One protest came from the Lighthouse Medical Practice, a GP office across the street.
The medical practice stated, “We formally object to this application due to incompatible land use, public health concerns, and disruption to our quiet residential area.”
“We have 18,200 patients and an active patient group who we are sure will support us in this objection.”

“A drinking establishment will most likely result in a significant increase in noise and customers gathering outside, particularly in the evenings and on weekends.
“No doubt there will be elevated ambient noise; raised voices, laughter, and antisocial shouting – especially after alcohol consumption.”
However, the ideas got strong popular support, with 57 letters filed. The directors also emphasised that the bar is not designed to be a low-cost drinking venue.
They informed us: “We will not be selling cheap products and will not be offering drinks deals to encourage customers seeking a cheap way to get drunk.”The new bar is now open at the former photography studio (Image: Google)
One letter of support came from Joseph Hill, director of Eastbourne’s Towner art gallery.
He wrote: “This construction is a much-needed complement to the town’s hospitality offer, which is currently lacking in high-quality, independent venues.
“The wine bar would help reinvigorate a stretch of the town centre that is currently dominated by underutilised or low-footfall premises.”
The plans (reference 250434) were approved by Eastbourne Borough Council on November 12. The bar was granted authorisation to open seven days a week from noon to midnight.
