Player exits Hibs after Charlton Athletic recall as David Gray shares why decision is correct outcome.

The defender moved from Charlton Athletic during the summer transfer window. Zach Mitchell has returned to Charlton Athletic after being recalled from his loan spell with Hibernian.

The centre-back impressed at Premiership level with St Johnstone last season and joined Easter Road on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window.

He has played twice under head coach David Grey, who also possesses Rocky Bushiri, Grant Hanley, Warren O’Hora, and Jack Iredale as natural centre-backs.

Charlton Athletic, an English Championship club, has decided to recall him during the January transfer window in order to provide him with more regular game time.

Grey acknowledges to making a sound judgement and praises Mitchell’s professionalism.

Why has Zach Mitchell left Hibs?

Grey commented on the Addicks‘ talent, saying, “I’d like to commend Zach for the way he has handled himself around the Club and for all his hard work.

We had a lot of competition for positions in his field, so he had to be patient for his opportunities.

“Zach is a young kid who wants to play, which we perfectly understand, therefore it makes sense for him to return to Charlton Athletic, even though we cannot guarantee it.

He was a model professional during his time here, a pleasure to work with, and always eager to learn, and I wish him all the best in the future.”

A Hibs statement reads: “We can announce that Charlton Athletic has today recalled Zach Mitchell.

The 21-year-old defender joined Hibernian FC on loan in September 2025 and appeared twice for the club. Everyone at Hibs wishes Zach all the best in the future and appreciates his participation.”

Zach Mitchell on playing for Hibs

Speaking after his appearance against Dundee United at Tannadice last month, the central defender said:

“I’ve had to be patient, but the staff have been fantastic, and my experience there has really helped me through that game.I’m grateful for this opportunity. It’s challenging for a player. You always want to be playing and have game time.

“But I’ve been learning in other ways, off the pitch and on the training ground. As I previously stated, the staff and other players have been fantastic with me, so I am grateful for the opportunity today.

Hopefully, I can keep going. I believe that having a familiarity with the league and specific teams from the previous season is usually beneficial. But it’s a different culture and team, so you’ll have to learn and adapt.

“It’s a terrific club with a great group of guys. We’ll keep moving forward together, and I’m looking forward to the next one.

As a player, you must be ready at any moment. It can be difficult to avoid overemphasising the occasion.

You must exercise self-control in this regard. It’s crucial not to get too high in some situations, and obviously not too low either.”
