Police call handler unlawfully accessed records and disclosed personal information.
Gary Moran used his position as a call handler at Dundee Control Room to obtain police records.
A Dundee call handler unlawfully accessed police records and revealed personal information.
Gary Moran pleaded guilty in Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday to four charges under the Data Protection Act and one charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
The 40-year-old accessed police records without a legitimate policing purpose and disclosed personal information over a three-year period, from October 21 to August 2024.
The crimes occurred while he worked as a call handler in the Dundee Control Room. Moran was fired from his position before the court case was resolved due to a separate disciplinary issue.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, September 9. Detective Superintendent Nathan Calderwood, Professional Standards, stated:
“Gary Moran took advantage of his position as a call handler by accessing police systems to view records he had no business reason to see.
He further violated values by disclosing sensitive information to third parties.”Trust and confidence in police officers and staff is critical, and individuals like Moran have no place in Police Scotland.
Any officer or staff member who fails to maintain the high standards we expect in policing will face consequences. “We will always investigate complaints against police officers and staff who do not uphold our values and standards.”
