Police scold witnesses to alleged rape in Sheffield last night who ‘filmed it on their mobile phones’.
Police have chastised witnesses to an alleged rape in Sheffield city centre who ‘filmed it on their mobile phones’ and then shared the evidence online.
A 41-year-old man is in prison following an attack on Mulberry Street, off High Street, between Natwest and Lidl, early this morning (September 20). Paramedics contacted South Yorkshire Police at 3.29 a.m. and requested help. Within minutes, officers arrived on the scene and detained a 41-year-old guy, who is now in police custody.
Officers transported the person to the hospital and are still providing assistance. Temporary Detective Inspector Carly Booth stated, “We recognise the anxiety that instances like these can generate in our society.
“Officers were quickly on scene and arrested a man, who remains in our custody and my team is working at pace to ensure a thorough investigation.”
The victim will continue to get care and assistance. However, South Yorkshire Police issued a statement today criticising how footage of the alleged rape is currently circulating online. The statement begins with this:
“We understand that members of the public who witnessed the incident are believed to have filmed it on their mobile phones.” We are encouraging anyone who have footage to think about their conduct before sharing it online.”T/DI Booth added: “Speculation and the posting of material on social media is incredibly unhelpful and causes great misery to the victim and others who know them.
“I urge anyone who has footage and has not yet spoken with us to contact us. And I advise those to think about their acts before spreading their content.
Anyone with information is requested to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and reference incident number 85 from September 20, 2025.
