Portslade teenager defends WellBN Trans Health Hub.
A non-binary adolescent has defended a “unique” transgender health centre in the city that is currently under investigation for providing puberty-blocking hormones to children.
Jessica Smith, 16, has been under the care of WellBN in Western Road, Hove, since she was 15.
The NHS has barred WellBN from prescribing puberty-suppressing hormones, among other things, due to concerns that they may have “inappropriately” provided them to people under the age of 16.
Jessica, who identifies as non-binary, started feeling like she was in the wrong body at the age of 11.
They identified as trans feminine, which means they have a feminine identity but do not identify as female, at the age of 13. They started taking hormonal medicine at the age of 16.
Jessica, who lives in Portslade, described WellBN’s Trans Health Hub, which strives to improve access to healthcare and support for trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender-variant persons aged 16 and above, as “amazing” for them.

“I found out about WellBN via another trans person. “You have a talk, they assess your maturity, and they explain what the treatment is, whatever the best option is for the individual.
“It’s truly great. “Dr. Hall is the lead GP, and the trans community adores him.” “That’s what I enjoy about the healthcare system:
knowing there are people who care and can get you what you need without having to wait years.
“It has significantly improved my quality of life. I feel better as a person.
“It’s an amazing service and everyone in the trans community is so grateful.”
Jessica said the clinic is important for the trans community (Image: Supplied)WellBN is currently under investigation by the NHS for “prescribing or arranging the supply of medication for gender dysphoria” for under 18s.
The clinic is no longer initiating prescribing of hormone medications for children and young people under 18 for gender dysphoria.
The outline for the investigation was published last month.
It stated that WellBN “may have been inappropriately offering both initiation of puberty suppressing hormones and masculinising and feminising exogenous hormones to several individuals under 18 years of age, including individuals who are under 16 years of age”.
The study states: “In the process of determining the scope of the practice’s activity, indications that patient harm may have occurred have now emerged.” “This relates to the age of individuals being prescribed exogenous hormones and other medications as a response to gender incongruence, and the apparent absence of advice or support from paediatric and/or child mental health clinicians with expertise in the broader assessment of young people with complex mental health and developmental challenges, as well as from expert paediatric endocrinologists.”
A special helpline has been established for WellBN’s gender care recipients under the age of 18.
Jessica stated that they had been warned by the clinic that their care could be halted due to an investigation.
They went on to say, “If my care stopped, I wouldn’t feel comfortable in my body anymore.
