Portsmouth FC fans’ favourites: Pompey supporters rank 14 of the ‘greatest’ players to grace Fratton Park.
Ask every Portsmouth fan where their love for the club began, and you’ll hear a narrative filled with passion, pride, and that unmistakable Pompey spirit.
So when we asked The News readers on Facebook to name the player who first made them fall in love with Pompey and who they believe is the club’s finest of all time, the answer was nothing short of incredible.
Hundreds of you chimed in, sharing memories, friendly disputes, and poignant condolences. The following was a list of Fratton Park royalty. Here are a handful of the comments readers left:
Brett Holdaway, “The Prosmeister.” He played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. And us.
He looked like Zidane with a cigar on. And we almost went down that season.”
Robert Ellis: “Jimmy Dickinson. An international centre half, never spoken to by a referee, let alone booked.” Mark Woolley:

1. Robert Prosinečki
During the 2001-02 season, Robert Prosinečki captivated Fratton Park with his exceptional technique and creativity, earning him a cult following.
His hat-trick against Barnsley is one of Pompey’s most memorable individual performances.
Though he stayed only one season, scoring nine goals in 35 appearances, he is still fondly remembered as one of the club’s most gifted players and received the most nominations in our fans’ greatest player of all time poll. | Getty Images.
2. Paul Merson
Paul Merson joined Portsmouth in 2002 and helped the club win the First Division title and gain promotion to the Premier League.
His vision, leadership, and experience revolutionised Pompey’s attacking play throughout Harry Redknapp’s tenure.
Merson’s impact on that championship-winning team remains one of the club’s most defining storylines in the modern age. He had 12 goals in 44 games.
3. Jimmy Dickinson
Jimmy Dickinson is a true Portsmouth legend, having spent his whole playing career with the club from 1946 to 1965.
He appeared in over 800 games and was instrumental in winning back-to-back league championships in 1949 and 1950.

4. Lassana Diarra
Lassana Diarra’s brief tenure at Portsmouth in 2008 and 2009 demonstrated his world-class midfield ability.
He was key to Pompey’s FA Cup victory in 2008, dominating midfields with intensity and technical skill.
