Poundland are closing their Dundee Wellgate store after 20 years of operation.
A long-standing Dundee shop will close its doors this autumn, signalling the end of an era for one of the Wellgate Centre’s most recognisable names.
Poundland has confirmed that its store in the shopping centre will close on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The discount retailer has been a fixture in the Wellgate for over two decades, serving generations of customers and employing hundreds of people along the way.
Many people, including the team, were surprised by the closure, which they described as a “real shock.” In a Facebook post, the Dundee Poundland team stated that they have been “proud to be part of the Wellgate Centre” for over 20 years.
They continued, “Serving thousands of wonderful customers and working alongside hundreds of truly fantastic colleagues has been an honour. Many of you have become more than just customers; you’ve become friends and regulars that we will never forget.
The heartfelt message also praised the store’s support since news of the closure broke, saying the public’s “kindness, encouragement, and warm words” meant the world to staff.
“They’ve reminded us just how special Dundee is, and how lucky we’ve been to be part of it,” the caption went on to say. Poundland employees have pledged to continue providing customers with “a laugh, a smile, and our very best service” until the last day in October.
However, the closure has raised concerns about the future of employees, with the store encouraging local businesses to consider hiring members of their team. The statement continued: “If any local employers are looking for new team members, please contact us.
The colleagues I’ve had the privilege of working with here are among the most dedicated, hard-working, and caring individuals you could hope to meet; they would be an asset to any business.” The closure is the latest change for the Wellgate Centre, which has lost several major tenants in recent years as retail shifts reshape city centres.
For many Dundonians, the loss of Poundland will leave a noticeable void in the heart of the shopping centre.
