Premiership rival uses two Hearts refereeing controversies to paint VAR dismay as direct message sent
Premiership rival uses two Hearts refereeing controversies to paint VAR dismay as direct message sent.
Hearts have been mentioned as a rival who has been left holding the bag over refereeing in Scotland. Livingston manager David Martindale used a Hearts example to express his dissatisfaction with refereeing in Scottish football.
The Lions were defeated 3-2 in the Premiership at Dundee on Saturday in controversial fashion. After wasting a chance late in the second half, the Dark Blues rushed up the pitch, where Charlie Reilly was brought down by former Hearts defender Danny Wilson.
VAR was consulted, and a penalty was given, which was converted. Martindale was shocked after the match and cited Hearts’ victory against Rangers as the reason.
The SFA’s Key Match Incident panel determined that Hearts’ opener should have been disallowed due to a handball by Lawrence Shankland in the buildup.
Rangers’ ruled-out goal in the 2-0 loss to the Jambos was similarly considered improperly on a two-on-one basis, while Kilmarnock had an incorrectly awarded penalty against them against Celtic the same weekend. The Livi chief is seeking more.
Rival boss on Hearts refereeing controversy
Martindale stated on Sportsound: “We go up the pitch, there’s an attacking phase, and we need to score.” We need to score to make it 3-2. Regardless, we don’t. Then there is the attacking phase.
Danny Wilson is in the box; he goes to tackle, half pulls out the tackle, and plants his foot.
“The contact was instigated by a Dundee player. In real time, I thought it looked like a pen, but when I watched it again, I said, ‘there’s no way that’s a pen’.
The VAR authorities then send a referee to the monitor, which informs me that there are two individuals looking at film from various camera angles, stating, ‘you might have made a mistake here, I believe you’d better go and look at the monitor.
“He looks at the monitor and then replies, ‘No, it’s a pen. I told the referee after the game, “You’d better hope you got that right.” This cannot continue.
It cannot. This week, I’m affected; next week, someone else will be. Rangers, Kilmarnock, Celtic, and Hearts all gain; this cannot continue.
David Martindale on Lawrence Shankland handball vs Rangers
“We are paying millions of pounds for individuals to make decisions based on film.
They appear to still be getting it wrong. I’m sitting in the house, watching it back, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh, maybe you’re allowed to handball it there if it’s not intended, with Shankland and stuff like that.
“When you use the film, how are we making poor conclusions when we look at certain camera angles? That is the portion I do not comprehend. I can’t wrap my head around it; I’m bewildered by how we’re doing this wrong.
I believe it is the responsibility of those in charge of making these judgements; I do not believe Willie [Collum] is to blame. It’s impossible to tell whether it’s genuinely improving the game.”
