Proposal for new Rawmarsh venue with cocktails and ice cream parlour faces licensing showdown

Proposal for new Rawmarsh venue with cocktails and ice cream parlour faces licensing showdown.

Plans for a new Rawmarsh venue will be presented to councillors this week, following an alcohol licence application that received nine objections but 57 letters of support.

The Wigtox Lounge project at the former Ryecroft & Rawmarsh Working Men’s Club site on South Street, which closed in 2019, will be decided during a licensing hearing on Wednesday (August 27).

An earlier application made by the applicant’s husband was withdrawn due to concerns from residents and the appropriate authorities.

The applicant, Helen Clayton, accepted the objections concerning late hours and outdoor use, stating that the closing time has been decreased to 11 p.m. on weeknights and that the rooftop terrace will no longer be used.

“I hope the changes made to my application demonstrate the intention to be a good neighbour to those around us,” she conveyed. “I genuinely want to run a family-friendly venue that will be an asset to the whole community.”

Children attending the infant school next door will have to go by smoking clients and filthy pavements. Local women have reported dread of returning home in the dark if drunken crowds assemble outside their homes.”

In contrast, the application has received 57 letters of support, indicating widespread support. Supporters claimed that the Wigtox Lounge would put a formerly vacant property to good use while also providing a safe, well-managed social area for locals.

They emphasised the applicant’s desire to create a family-friendly environment, citing plans for children’s events, film screenings, and live acoustic music.

One supporter expressed their entire support for the new establishment, stating that it will significantly benefit the neighbourhood. It intends to serve a diverse population, which is exactly what our community requires.” Another added:

“The idea of it being transformed into a dynamic communal place is a wonderful change, and I feel it will considerably improve our neighbourhood.

Recently, I was approached by a group of women who handed me a brochure with unpleasant and, in my opinion, incorrect information regarding the lounge’s opening.”
