Rangers sack Martin after 17 games

Rangers sack Martin after 17 games.

Russell Martin has been fired as Rangers’ head coach after 17 games, with the club stating that “while all transition periods require some time, results have not met expectations”.

The 39-year-old’s final match was a 1-1 draw against Falkirk on Sunday, after which he was led away from the stadium by police when fans attempted to block the team bus from leaving.

Martin had faced rising criticism and protests from Ibrox fans following a disappointing start to the season. Rangers didn’t win the Scottish Premiership until late September, and they were humiliated 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs back in August.

As the domestic season approaches its second international break, Rangers are ninth in the Premiership, 11 points behind leaders Hearts. Martin, who was hired on a three-year deal by Rangers’ new American owners in June, won only one of his seven league games while drawing five, and leaves with five wins in all competitions.

Assistant Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson will both go. The Rangers statement continued, “Russell and his staff have worked exceedingly hard throughout their stay at the club. We appreciate them for their efforts and wish them well in the future.
