According to your account, the authorities removed St George’s flags from Brighton lampposts the next morning. Some moved even faster than that.

At 7.30 p.m., I saw a man climb a tall ladder and hang them from the lampposts along Madeira Drive.

Soon after he and his patriotic flaggers returned to their vehicle, a rival team of anti-patriotic anti-flaggers arrived on the site.

Their ladder wasn’t very long (health and safety concerns were raised), but by 8 p.m., the most of the flags had been removed again.

Chuggers, hucksters, and amplified evangelists cry that we are all adulterers and sinners. I have never seen this city so run-down, filthy, and uncivilised.

On Thursday, the flags fluttering in the evening breeze cheered me briefly, possibly as a gesture of defiance against all of our time’s ideological folly, but the sense of urban gloom and misery quickly returned.
