Readers react to plans for new speed cameras on Dundee Kingsway

Readers react to plans for new speed cameras on Dundee Kingsway.

The 40-mph speed cameras will be installed near the Kingsway Retail Park.

Readers have provided feedback on plans for more speed cameras on Dundee’s Kingsway. It was announced that cameras will be erected on both sides of the road near the Kingsway Retail Park on Monday.

Both cameras will be operational seven days a week and will detect any vehicles violating the 40mph speed limit. The decision was taken by Police Scotland, the Scottish Safety Camera Programme, and Transport Scotland.

The region is constantly monitored by traffic camera vans, although the Scottish Safety Camera Programme reports that 45% of vehicles broke the 40mph speed limit on that stretch.

Residents have expressed their opinions on The Courier’s website, as well as The Courier and Evening Telegraph Facebook pages.

The plans have baffled several people. WhatEver commented: “Wow, two cameras. Slow down at both cameras, then accelerate again. (It) will not address the problem, but standard cameras will. Scott Michaels commented:

“In the 1980s, the speed limit on the Kingsway was 60 mph throughout the whole length of it. “Why was the speed limit decreased to 40mph in some places? It isn’t like there were hundreds of accidents on that road.

Robert Downie Ewen went on to say, “I’ve only recently returned to the region, and the only issue I’ve observed with drivers is the new traffic lights. “I’m sure there are accidents, but I’m thinking they’re very rare.”

George Duncan Keirans commented on the situation: “Any ‘improvement’ that has been made to that road over recent years has only been detrimental to the 1000s of road users that are on it every day.”

Others backed the measure, which they believe will lower the number of speeding drivers.

Thomas stated, “I’m all for speed cameras on the Kingsway.” “The speeding, especially at night, has gotten out of control.” Nunurbiz added, “Not too concerned about this. I find it difficult to get up to 40 on the Kingsway as it is.

Stuart Thompson went on: “As they are going to be there permanently, I guess that cements the fact I’ll always need to adjust my speed beforehand, rather than risk it like I always do now hoping that van is not there.”

Other readers recommended what the council should do to eliminate the dangers of speeding on the Kingsway. Charles Allison commented: “Some days, these portions are quite packed.

I believe that most Kingsway drivers are quite good at permitting merging arrivals from side crossroads and roundabouts. “Long term, they should plan for a city bypass similar to Aberdeen’s.

Longforgan to Tealing in less than ten minutes? ” BabyDoll suggested: “They should also install cameras on the 40 mph road from Claypotts to Ethiebeaton. “Every time I drive at 40 mph on that route, I see a lot of vehicles, vans, and HGVs racing by me! ”

Cynical Jeff proposed: “They’d be far better suited as’red light’ cameras at the Forfar Road/Kingsway and Forfar Road/Claverhouse and Fountainbleau intersections.

“The chances some take at these lights are truly mindboggling.”
