Ryan Mason makes Alfie Gilchrist admission at West Brom amid key selection claim.
Alfie Gilchrist has yet to make his West Brom debut following his signing from Chelsea in the final days of the summer transfer window.
The right-back joined the Baggies for about £1.2 million, but has been an unused replacement in the last three Championship games.
Gilchrist is an exciting signing for West Brom, given the great accolades he received when at Stamford Bridge, and many people expected him to break into the team almost away.
However, this has not been the case for him thus far, and Ryan Mason has now thrown some light on the scenario involving the 21-year-old.
Ryan Mason insists that Alfie Gilchrist will be involved
George Campbell has filled in at right-back for West Brom in recent games, with the summer signing playing significantly out of position. The Baggies manager has confessed that his new signing required time to adjust.
“I don’t know how many days we’ve had Alfie (Gilchrist) in the building, but it’s probably not much longer than two weeks,” Mason told the Express and Star. “Whereas George (Campbell) has been in for maybe two months, so it’s important to appreciate and respect that as well.
“When you do business in the final day or two of the window, players will want time to grasp what we want and anticipate from them.
“We’re certainly going to need Alfie, and he’s going to play a lot of football for us this season.”
Albion’s unblemished start to the new league season has come to an end with back-to-back defeats in the previous two games, and there could not be a better time to bring in players like Gilchrist.
The Black Country outfit was a bit disjointed in possession at the Riverside Stadium, and the added balance that a natural full-back like Gilchrist would give is undoubtedly needed, despite Campbell’s best efforts.
The teenager already has Championship experience from a loan spell with Sheffield United last season, and he possesses numerous traits that can help Albion get back on track.
