Scotland’s ‘unhealthiest high streets’ named as one city dominates top 10

Scotland’s ‘unhealthiest high streets’ named as one city dominates top 10.

One street was found to have more than 50 takeaways.

The “most unhealthy high streets” in Scotland have been identified. One city in the country tops the list, with four of the top ten unhealthiest roads.

The Independent Pharmacy conducted a recent study on over 400 high streets in the United Kingdom that were more than 700 metres long.

The experts evaluated them based on the density of takeaways, bars, sweet shops, vape businesses, and gyms, as well as air quality data.

Dumbarton Road in Glasgow was ranked as Scotland’s unhealthiest high street. The street, which runs through the West End and Partick and is the country’s longest high street at 1.7 kilometres, has 19 bars, 10 off-licences, 20 takeaways, and only one gym.

Meanwhile, the second-most unhealthy street in Scotland was named Sauchiehall Street. which runs from the city centre to the West End of Glasgow, is also a popular nightlife destination. It has 53 eateries, 13 pubs and clubs, and no gyms.

Two more Glasgow streets appear in the top ten. Great Western Road and Byres Road, which cross paths in the heart of the West End, rank ninth and tenth, respectively.

Ayr’s Main Street placed third on The Independent Pharmacy’s list. The street has 16 bars, seven vape shops, and three sweet shops.

According to scientists, the surrounding environment has an impact on a population’s well-being.
The Independent Pharmacy stated, “Where we live frequently defines how we live. High streets should encourage healthy choices rather than make them more challenging. When fast food restaurants outnumber gyms twenty to one, we are preparing people for failure.
“In many towns, the unhealthy alternative is not only available; it is unavoidable. Communities dominated by takeout and alcohol establishments have a higher incidence of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
It’s not that individuals don’t comprehend the risks; it’s that their surroundings make the healthy option the most difficult to make.”
The experts went on to say, “If nothing changes, we will see shorter lives, a lower quality of life, and more health disparities.
Britain’s health is being sculpted not simply in hospitals and GP practices, but also on the main street pavements.” Linlithgow, Coatbridge, and Aberdeen are among the other Scottish towns and cities included on the list.
Elsewhere, George Street was named Edinburgh’s unhealthiest high street, with 18 pubs but no gym.
