From a crowded marketplace to school corridors, these photographs will transport you back six decades to the swinging 1960s.

They depict enormous changes in Sheffield, as a modernist masterpiece emerges on the hill and the M1 climbs over the roofs.

While those two icons remain recognisable on the city’s skyline, other iconic buildings and structures depicted in this retro photo gallery are no longer there.

The Tinsley cooling towers, which had served as twin beacons welcoming tourists home for so many years, collapsed in 2008.

The Hole in the Road tube, with its fish tank in the wall, was demolished before being filled in to make space for the new tram network in 1994.

These images will evoke memories of shopping in the 1960s, whether it was exploring the stalls at Castle Market, checking out the latest items at Walsh’s department store, or purchasing new gear at Sugg Sport.
