Sheffield retro: 29 photos show popular 80s shops you may remember and the people who ran them.
These images record the final days before Meadowhall Shopping Centre opened, forever changing the landscape of retail in Sheffield.
They feature some of Sheffield’s most beloved shops from the 1980s, ranging from large department stores like House of Fraser to small independents.
Some of the people who ran them are also pictured, including the owner of an award-winning fish and chip business. Do you remember Pulse Records on Cambridge Street, Redgates Toy Store, or Sugg Sports?
Do you miss some of the lost high street titans seen in this retro photo gallery, such as Woolworths, Debenhams, and Freeman Hardy Willis?
The 1980s saw a number of significant advances in the retail industry, including the introduction of bar codes.
However, the inauguration of Meadowhall in September 1990 had the greatest impact on Sheffield’s shopping environment, particularly in the city centre.
These photographs transport you back to the days before the massive out-of-town shopping mall, depicting shops on city centre streets such as The Moor, Fargate, and Pinstone.
They also take you to the suburbs, which include Crookes, Dore, Greystones, and Hillsborough.
How many of the shops shown do you remember, and do you recognise any of the owners or employees?
