Sheffield retro: 36 nostalgic photos taking you back to 1972, when petrol cost 8p a litre.

The dancefloor at Baileys nightclub is packed, Castle Market is bustling, and the Hole in the Road remains a favourite gathering spot.

These nostalgic photographs transport you back to Sheffield in 1972, when the Ford Cortina controlled Britain’s roadways.

Back then, a litre of petrol cost only 8p, a pint of beer cost 14p, and the average property cost slightly more than £5,000. This retro photo gallery depicts life in Sheffield that year, from school hallways to shops, bars, and factory floors.

The shops depicted include BHS, C&A, Mac Market, and Walsh’s department store, with the ancient Sheaf Valley Swimming Baths among the vanished landmarks.

Pele, the world’s greatest footballer, visited Sheffield in 1972, as shown here playing for Santos against Sheffield Wednesday.

Other festivities that year included a stunning It’s a Knockout-style competition at Norfolk Park, water skiing at Crookes Valley Park, and the famed Rag Parade, which wound its way through town.

Do these photographs bring back any memories of your time in Sheffield in the early 1970s?
