Sheffield retro: Looking back at Haymarket and Waingate – two of old Sheffield’s busy streets.
These images from our collection show a stroll through the Haymarket and Waingate neighbourhoods of old Sheffield.
Our retro gallery includes images of the ancient Norfolk Market Hall, taverns, street scenes, and more.

1. Haymarket
Haymarket, which was previously used to buy and sell hay, is one of Sheffield’s oldest streets.
When this photo was taken in the 1950s, Davy’s food store dominated the scene, with “The Old No 12” restaurant next door and Davy’s Mikado Cafe beyond.
Before the war, the Mikado served an old-style Yorkshire tea for 1s 6d, which included gammon or bacon and an egg. The ancient Brunswick bar may be seen further up Haymarket. Photo via Sheffield Newspapers.
