Sheffield United weighing up offer for Derby and Watford target as interest from Italy in ‘huge talent’ hots up
Sheffield United weighing up offer for Derby and Watford target as interest from Italy in ‘huge talent’ hots up.
Sheffield United’s summer transfer window is far from over, and EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that the Blades have set their sights on a Scotland international.
The Yorkshire club has had a difficult start to the season, losing three games in a row to Bristol City, Birmingham, and Swansea across all competitions.
Selles recently criticised the club’s recruitment, calling it ‘not good enough’. After losing Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord, defensive concerns have arisen, with even captain Jack Robinson being questioned in the Blades’ early performances.
However, the former Reading and Hull manager may soon receive some much-needed reinforcements, as EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal Sheffield United travelled to scout out a potential new addition at right back – but they will have to beat rivals to sign him.
Exclusive: Sheffield United watched Max Johnston in Sturm Graz win
EFL Analysis understands that a number of clubs watched Scottish international Max Johnston over the weekend, with the player expected to move before the end of the transfer window.
We can exclusively reveal that Sheffield United was among the teams that witnessed Sturm Graz’s 3-1 victory over SV Ried, and Johnston had an outstanding game, assisting and scoring.
The right-back, who has already received bids from Derby and Watford this summer, is attracting interest from a number of clubs.
While Derby and Watford remain interested, the Blades are considering an offer for the highly rated Scottish international.
However, we can reveal that interest is high in Italy. Bologna, led by Johnston’s compatriot Lewis Ferguson, is particularly interested.

Hellas Verona has also expressed an interest in replacing Jackson Tchatchoua, who is set to join Wolves. Graeme Bailey, the EFL football analyst, stated: “Johnston is a huge talent, he has been brilliant in Austria since moving and now he is ready to move again and it could very well be in England, but the interest from Italy is very strong and they are set to make a big push for him.”
Derby are reportedly preparing to make a third bid for the Scotland international, after previous offers of £1.4 million and £1.6 million were turned down.
Where has Max Johnston played before?
Johnston, 21, was born in Middlesbrough but began his youth career with Scottish club Motherwell.
He progressed through their academy before taking senior loans to Queen of the South and Cove Rangers. The defender established himself at Motherwell and was named SFWA Young Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season.
He joined Sturm Graz in 2023 and signed a contract with the Austrian Bundesliga club until 2027.
Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
2025/26 | 4 | 1 | 1 |
2024/25 | 31 | 1 | 6 |

Johnston is also a Scotland international, having earned his first and only cap in March this year.
He came on as a late substitute for former Norwich City star Billy Gilmour in a Nations League victory over Greece.
