Sir Bobby Charlton Named 3 Greatest Man United Players – Excluding Himself

Sir Bobby Charlton Named 3 Greatest Man United Players – Excluding Himself.

There aren’t many great footballers than Sir Bobby Charlton. For many, he is unquestionably the best player to have ever represented Manchester United.

The Englishman survived the Munich Air Disaster and went on to make 758 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring a then-record 249 goals.

He also helped the team win its first European Cup in 1968, as well as three First Division championships.

When Sir Bobby is removed from the equation, Manchester United surely has no shortage of legends. In 2011, he told the Daily Mail which three past club heroes he regarded to be the best.

Explaining why he chose athletes from an older generation since they did not have modern medicine and surgery to cope with injury setbacks, he said: “Now, with keyhole surgery, you’re back training in 48 hours.”

Duncan Edwards

Special player who died too young

In the same interview, Charlton described Duncan Edwards as his number one pick for all footballers, not just Manchester United.

He said, “Ask me who is the best footballer the world has ever seen. Ask me who the best football player I’ve ever played alongside is. Ask me who the best football player I’ve ever played against is. The same answer: Duncan Edwards.

Do not ask me how much better he would have become. It defies the imagination. Edwards moved into the first squad as a 16-year-old and helped win back-to-back league titles before tragically dying in the Munich Air Disaster.

He was only 21 years old at the time. For almost all who saw him play, he was on the path to becoming an all-time great before his life was tragically cut short.

George Best

The original football maverick

During their final years as Old Trafford teammates, George Best and Charlton fell out, even coming to despise each other, over the Northern Irishman’s extravagant lifestyle. Despite this, both men were able to set aside their differences when discussing their individual achievements for Manchester United.

Both guys were part of a rare British group who won the Ballon d’Or, and they represent a brilliant era of football for the Red Devils. Of all British footballers, only Charlton may be regarded higher than Best.

Denis Law

Scottish Ballon d’Or Winner

Denis Law, another British Ballon d’Or winner, was the first of the trio to accomplish so, winning in 1964, followed by two triumphs that came exactly two years apart. A true Manchester United icon, he is also one of Scotland’s best players of all time. He was a member of Manchester United’s ‘holy trinity’ of 1960s greats, alongside Charlton and Best. Law seems to adore those two as much as they loved him, once saying: “The best part about playing with Bobby and George was that if one of us was having a bad day, the other two understood, and that’s what made our friendship special.
