Southampton lose ‘specialist’ to Liverpool following transfer deadline day.
Southampton were extremely busy at the end of the summer transfer window, assembling a squad for Will Still to make a drive for promotion back to the Premier League.
In the final days of the summer transfer window, the Saints signed Finn Azaz from Middlesbrough, Tom Fellows from West Brom, and Caspar Jander.
Southampton did, however, lose some notable players throughout the summer, with Tyler Dibling leaving for Everton, Mateus Fernandes joining West Ham, and Will Smallbone joining Millwall on loan on deadline day.
While the transfer deadline has passed, Southampton has lost another key element of their squad, as he has left for Liverpool.
Southampton lose Lewis Mahoney to Liverpool
On deadline day, Liverpool finally signed the player they had been hunting all summer: Alexander Isak joined the Reds for a British record amount of £125 million from Newcastle United.
The team worked late into the night after the deadline to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, but the transaction could not be completed.

While the deadline has passed, Liverpool has announced the signing of Lewis Mahoney from Southampton, as reported by Training Ground Guru. According to reports, Mahoney will become Liverpool’s ‘first specialised set-piece analysis’, filling in for opposing analyst James French, who left the club after 13 years to join Manchester City.
Who is Lewis Mahoney?
Lewis Mahoney, a Welsh national, is expected to join Liverpool from Southampton.
He will work closely with Aaron Briggs, who has taken on the role of specialist set-piece coach this season after previously being individual development coach.
His career began with Swansea City in September 2017, where he worked as a Development Centre Coach before becoming an Academy Performance Analyst Intern.
Mahoney has been Southampton’s set-piece analyst since January 2024, after spending three and a half years as a first-team performance analyst at Bristol Rovers.
