Strand Larsen signs new deal two months after £23m move.
Wolves attacker Jorgen Strand Larsen has signed a new contract until 2030, little over two months after joining the club permanently.
The five-year contract, with an option for an additional year, comes after Wolves turned down bids of £50 million and £55 million from Newcastle in the summer.
Strand Larsen, 25, scored 14 goals on loan from Celta Vigo last season, helping Wolves finish 16th in the Premier League before completing a £23 million transfer in July.
Wolves manager Vitor Pereira, who signed a new three-year contract on Thursday, said Strand Larsen’s committment is “very good news” for the club and its fans. He went further:
“If we want to take a step to be on another level, we need players like Larsen, because it’s not only about his tactical and technical ability, it’s about his spirit and personality.”
Strand Larsen has two goals this season, both of which came in the EFL Cup triumph over West Ham, however he has missed the following two games due to an Achilles injury. Regarding his new contract, he stated, “I’ve been really happy here at Wolves.
“Signing a new contract demonstrates that my dedication is here; I’m pleased here; I adore all of my friends and teammates; the fans are fantastic; and all we want to do is improve on last year’s performance.
“I’ve signed a new contract for additional years at Wolves, which is ideal for me – the club is happy, I’m happy, and I’m eager to get back on the pitch.
“The most important thing for me is to come back to the pitch and for us to start winning and get out of the bad start we had.”
Wolves, who sit bottom of the table, play Leeds on Saturday after losing their first four Premier League games and are hopeful Strand Larsen will be fit enough to make the bench.
Analysis
Whether Strand Larsen faces Leeds at Molineux this weekend or not, the Wolves have improved their chances of survival. The Norway international’s new contract comes after rejecting bids from Newcastle in the summer, and keeping him at the club was a sign of strength.
The striker also handled himself admirably, being professional and coming off the substitute to score twice against West Ham in the EFL Cup during the height of the Magpies’ interest.
Strand Larsen signed on loan in 2024, with plans to make the contract permanent, so his previous terms were already in place.
Internally, it is not considered as appropriate to give him a new contract so soon after he formally joined the club. He has practically been a full-time Wolves player for the past 15 months.
Newcastle’s involvement exacerbated the situation, but a new contract would have been discussed regardless following a good maiden season in the Premier League. It is not uncommon for Wolves players to sign new contracts after receiving interest from other clubs.
Strand Larsen scored 22% of Wolves’ goals, helping them stay in the top division after Pereira replaced Gary O’Neil in December.
Crucial goals against Southampton and Ipswich in March and April helped Wolves secure safety with five games remaining, and the club hopes he can replicate that influence this season.
