String of away games ‘caught up’ with Argyle.
Plymouth Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley believes his team’s rigorous schedule caught up with them as they lost 1-0 against Rotherham United.
The loss against the Millers stopped a streak of five games in 14 days, four of which were away from Home Park.
In that fortnight, Argyle had to travel to Blackpool, Leyton Orient, Luton Town, and Rotherham, traversing approximately 1,750 miles in all.
They have one week to prepare for Doncaster Rovers’ arrival on March 7. “I wouldn’t say I’m angry because I’ve got a group of players who are giving it their all, and a few of them have probably needed to be rotated,” Cleverley told the BBC Devon affiliate.
“The two weeks of four away games and five games in total just looked like it caught up with us today.” The result relegated Argyle to 12th place in League One, six points behind the play-off spots with 12 games remaining.
Cleverley was frustrated that his side failed to score against relegation-threatened Rotherham, who took a crucial seventh-minute lead through Joe Rafferty.
“It’s a phase of the game that we’ve struggled a little bit when we’re chasing games and we have more of the ball and we’re ringing their box,” Cleverley said to reporters.
“Having that quality implies that we break down obstacles and seek to overcome those.”
Today, we are deeply disheartened as a victory here would have reinforced our standing in the discourse; however, we are unable to take the requisite measures to guarantee our participation.”
