Swans Search for a Striking Solution: The Summer Transfer Hunt.
As the summer transfer window heats up, Swansea City finds itself at a crucial juncture, desperately seeking to bolster its attacking options.
The lingering shadow of Joel Piroe’s departure continues to loom large, with the Swans struggling to consistently find the back of the net since the prolific Dutchman left for Leeds United.
An overall increase in goals is not just desirable but essential for the upcoming season, and the club’s transfer activity in the striking department will be under intense scrutiny.
Swansea scored 51 league goals last season, with top scorer Liam Cullen contributing only 11.
This simply isn’t enough to compete at the Championship’s top level, and the attacking void left by Piroe, who scored 46 goals in 96 Swans appearances, must be filled with genuine quality and proven goal-scoring ability. Embed from Getty Images.
Oli McBurnie, a well-known name, has generated a lot of buzz among the Jack Army. The Scottish international, who had a successful spell at Swansea.
com Stadium before joining Sheffield United, is now a free agent after his current club, Las Palmas, was relegated from La Liga. McBurnie’s potential return is an intriguing possibility. During his last spell with the Swans, particularly in the 2018/19 season, he demonstrated his predatory instincts by scoring 22 Championship goals.
While his goal tally dropped during his time at Bramall Lane and then in Spain, the prospect of him regaining his Swansea form is undeniably appealing. He brings not only scoring ability, but also a physical presence, strong aerial ability, and a knack for creating opportunities for teammates, as evidenced by his six assists and 24 chances created in his previous season.
However, there is a potential stumbling block, with reports indicating interest from Celta Vigo, who could provide top-flight football and even Europa League competition.
The Swans will have to make a compelling case to entice him back to South Wales. Mykola Kuharevich has already left the club, complicating the already difficult situation. The Ukrainian forward, who arrived from Troyes for nearly £2 million in 2023, never really settled in South Wales.
He scored just one goal in 13 Swans appearances and spent last season on loan at Hibernian. His move to Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava for an undisclosed fee removes one attacking option from the roster, freeing up some wage budget while emphasising the need for reinforcements.
Furthermore, Jerry Yates appears to be heading to Blackpool. Yates, who was on loan at Derby County last season and scored ten goals, appears to be on the verge of returning to Bloomfield Road. He had a successful spell there previously, scoring 46 goals in 139 games, and it appears he will return to a familiar environment in League One.
While Yates was with Swansea last season, his potential departure highlights the need for new faces in the attacking third. Beyond McBurnie, the Swans have already been active in the transfer market, attempting to address their attacking deficiencies.
They spent £5 million on 23-year-old Swedish attacker Zeidane Inoussa from BK Hacken, who scored 11 goals last season. In addition, 20-year-old striker Bobby Wales has been signed from Kilmarnock for a six-figure fee. These acquisitions demonstrate a commitment to refreshing the attacking line.
However, the sheer volume of goals required suggests that more additions, particularly a proven Championship goalscorer, would be extremely beneficial. The challenge for Swansea’s recruitment team and manager Alan Sheehan is to find players who can not only contribute goals but also fit seamlessly into the team’s style.
As the club strives for a more competitive performance in the Championship, the emphasis is on increasing overall goal totals. The summer is still young, and the strikers available will determine the Swans’ fortunes in the coming season.
The search for that elusive prolific forward continues, with the hope that the new signings, combined with the possible return of a familiar face in McBurnie, will reignite the attacking fire at the Swansea.com Stadium.
