The Big Gun: Sheffield pub that served pints for over 200 years could become shops with HMO on top floors
The Big Gun: Sheffield pub that served pints for over 200 years could become shops with HMO on top floors.
‘A good bar for nice people’ could become shops in the near future as two centuries of history come to an end.
After 233 years of continuous beer flow, the Big Gun will close its doors for the final time in September 2023.
The Big Gun, which dates back to 1790, was the final boozer on the Wicker and is known for its sign, which reads: ‘A pleasant pub for nice people’. People told The Star that they were ‘gutted’ when it closed, asking, “Where do we go for a game of pool now?”.
Since then, developers have sought to revitalise the area, painting over the white façade, hiding all but one of the original pub’s signs, and installing new rolling shutters.
Sheffield Council gave approval to convert the upper floors of the premises into an HMO (home in multiple occupation) in September of this year, but another application has since been submitted to deal with the ground level.
The most recent proposal, submitted to Sheffield City Council’s planning board on October 29, offers transforming the pub into three commercial units. Documents indicate how two partition walls will be installed in the former bar area to divide the ground level into three shops.
Each would have its own toilet, with fire exits and bin storage at the back. The previously approved 12-bedroom HMO will continue to be accessible via a separate front doorway that leads to a stairway to the higher floors.
Residents’ bins will be housed in a separate area at the back of the building. The public consultation for the commercial unit proposals runs until December 1, with a decision expected on Christmas Eve.
