The Coventry areas to receive £20m in funding.
The money will be distributed to surrounding suburbs in £2 million installments over the course of ten years.
Two areas in Coventry are due to receive a cash boost, which will be spent on priorities chosen by locals. Binley and Willenhall will get £2 million each year for ten years, for a total of £20 million in government investment.
The revelation comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer introduced the £5 billion Pride in Place scheme, part of the government’s Plan for Change, which would see 169 locations receive the aforementioned number, including Nuneaton’s Camp Hill district.
A additional 95 sites will receive an immediate £1.5 million to improve public spaces with new green spaces, play areas, and sports and recreation facilities.
Government authorities have stated that how the money will be spent will be determined in conjunction with citizens.
Mary Creagh CBE, Labour MP for Coventry East, stated, “This is fantastic news for everyone in Binley and Willenhall.” Since being elected, I’ve fought hard in parliament for Coventry East, and my efforts are beginning to bear fruit.
We obtained £20 million in long-term investment for Binley and Willenhall under Labour’s Plan for Neighbourhoods. That is £2 million every year for the next decade. “Local citizens in Binley and Willenhall, not politicians in London, will decide how the money is spent.
It may be used to provide new possibilities for young people, to fund projects that keep our streets safe, or to build community pride. This is our moment to demonstrate what Binley and Willenhall residents can do.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented, “For far too long, people have seen their cities and streets decay, helpless to stop boarded-up shops and neglected parks. That’s all for now.
We’re investing in the future of the United Kingdom by empowering true patriots to develop communities across the country. People bring pride, hope, and life to our communities.
This is a huge investment, but what matters most is who decides how it will be spent. Neighbours, volunteers, and parents who know their neighbourhoods best – the individuals with a genuine stake in the outcome.
“We choose regeneration over decay, connection over isolation. This is our Plan for Change in action: restoring power and pride to those who make Britain great.
