The Hazmat crew was called to the Leicester building after a report of a peculiar scent.

The odour was detected on the upper floors of the four-story structure.

A suspicious odour was discovered in a building on London Road in Leicester city center, prompting police and firefighters to block the area.

At around 3pm on Saturday (February 14), Leicestershire Police called in the Hazardous Materials and Environmental Protection team from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service to respond to the incident at the building’s ground floor restaurants.

The lanes of London Road near Victoria Park were temporarily stopped to traffic as the building was searched.

At 4.30pm, the fire department sent a social media post titled “Update to incident on London Road, Leicester.” The incident is drawing to a close and is being scaled down; no one was injured. “The road will be open shortly.”

By 5.40 p.m., the road was fully open, and the police cordons had been lifted.

A spokesman for the fire service said today (Sunday, February 15) that a building inspection revealed nothing worrisome.

The incident comes after another hazardous materials team callout on Wednesday (February 11). in 1pm, emergency services blocked Baxter Gate in Loughborough town center due to concerns about a “hazardous substance” in a restaurant, which was later identified as salt.

During the event, residents of surrounding buildings were advised to keep their doors and windows closed and stay indoors.

Following the incident, Leicestershire Police detained a 29-year-old man on suspicion of initiating a fake call. He has since been released on bond.
