“Thanks to quick action by our control engineers, we were able to restore power to 1,297 consumers in just five minutes by rerouting electricity through other portions of the network.

“A smaller group of 148 customers remained without power while our teams investigated the cause.”

The interruption forced a number of stores and businesses in the neighbourhood to temporarily close, including the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Jacksons Wharf.

Northern Powergrid reported that a third-party contractor working in the retail park damaged an underground high-voltage wire, causing the outage.

“Our field workers worked as fast and safely as possible to complete repairs, and all customers were restored by approximately 12.30.

“We’d like to thank everyone who was affected for their patience as we finished this work.”
