TikTok trial manslaughter trio can launch bid to walk free from prison

TikTok trial manslaughter trio can launch bid to walk free from prison.

The Court of Appeal stated that the 2023 jury was given problematic instructions by the judge.

The Court of Appeal has determined that three people convicted of manslaughter in the TikTok murder trial may seek to overturn the conviction.

Last week, influencer Mahek Bukhari, who was imprisoned for the killings of Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, had her life sentence minimum lowered from 31 years and eight months to little under 27 years.

At the same hearing, her three co-defendants convicted of manslaughter, Natasha Akhtar, Ameer Jamal, and Sanaf Gulamustafa, all had their sentences reduced by two years, ranging from 11 to 15 years in prison.

The separate ruling means that those three can now challenge the Leicester Crown Court jury’s decision.
If they succeed, they will be released from prison.

The three were all occupants in the two cars that pursued Mr Hussain and Mr Ijazuddin from Leicester along the A46 before colliding with the central reserve and bursting into flames, killing both young men.

The Court of Appeal concluded that Judge Timothy Spencer KC gave problematic instructions to the jury in the trial and that there is “an arguable point that merits a full appeal hearing” in their decision.

Barristers for the three must now write out their arguments and submit them to the Court of Appeal before a hearing can begin.

It is unclear when the hearing will take place. The decision reads: “We grant each appellant leave to appeal against conviction. Leading Counsel will receive a representation order covering both the preparation for this hearing and the appeal itself.

The court will require skeleton arguments. The[wpstatistics stat=usersonline] provide a timeframe for these, as well as the submission of a reading list of relevant documents and a set of authorities.”

In total, seven people were found guilty for their part in the February 2022 event in which Mr Hussain, who had been having an affair with Mahek’s mother Ansreen, was taken to Leicester by his buddy Mr Ijazuddin to collect money from her.

Ansreen, who was sentenced for the men’s murders alongside Rekan Karwan and Raess Jamal, was driven to Leicester by her daughter, TikTok personality Mahek.

However, when Bukhari’s mother and daughter arrived in the city, the women met up with their five co-defendants, as well as another guy who was freed of all charges at the trial, and proceeded to ambush the men.

The defendants were waiting in the Tesco parking park in Hamilton, Leicester, with a variety of weapons and face masks.

When they came to meet the women, the victims, both 21 and from Banbury in Oxfordshire, are thought to have noticed two of the defendants lurking behind a hedge, wearing balaclavas.

They ran, and the eight persons in the ambush tracked them out of Leicester and up the A46.

The closing seconds of the chase were captured on a 999 call Mr Hussain made to Leicestershire Police, which ended abruptly when the men’s Skoda was forced off the road.
