Town chief wants to keep make watching Luton ‘fun’ for Hatters fans.
Town manager Matt Bloomfield intends to keep Hatters fans having as much ‘fun’ as possible while watching their club play this season.
On Saturday, Luton supporters saw their club in action against Burton Albion, wearing the new green third uniform for the first time since its unveiling a few days earlier. It contributed to a fantastic atmosphere in the away stand even before kick-off, as the 1,500-plus travelling supporters greeted their team with cries of ‘Green Army’ as they warmed up.
The jubilant atmosphere persisted throughout the game, no doubt aided by Town putting on their best performance of the season and largest win to date, leading 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Lasee Nordas and Milli Alli, despite the fact that they should have been out of the game against a poor Brewers side. Town supporters were unconcerned with the opposition’s quality, as they watched academy graduate Zack Nelson score in front of them on the hour mark to add a third and guarantee all three points were returned to Bedfordshire.
That all happened while fans of the Hatters were having a great time on the terrace thanks to news released by the club earlier this week, which said that for every goal scored while wearing the new strip, a tree would be planted at Town’s new home in Power Court. With Luton supporters chanting ‘we’ve got more trees than you,’ ‘we want tree,’ and ‘one tree to the Luton boys,’ it turned out to be one of the most fun away days in recent memory.
Bloomfield is also eager to see more of it, stating, “I want it to be fun for the boys. It won’t always be possible; we’ll have some bad times, of course; this is football, and we’ve been around long enough to know it won’t be easy, but I want them to enjoy watching us.
“I want us to entertain, I want us to have a strong relationship with the boys, and I believe we’ve had some great days away from home.
We’ve been to Derby (1-0 win), Stoke (1-1) and got a late equaliser, Cardiff (2-1 win), we’ve had some nice away days, Peterborough (2-0 win), and we’ve had a couple of tough ones, but I want them to enjoy watching their team and be proud of the boys.”
One of the main sources of entertainment for Luton fans was Alli’s play on the left flank, which resulted in an instant increase in volume whenever he had the ball and began to sprint forward. It resulted in multiple versions of his shout to the subject of the Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ song, which he was overjoyed to hear, saying: “The fans were amazing.
“They were quite loud. I heard them sing my song, which was great to hear, and I’d like to thank them for coming all this distance. It’s always encouraging to see supporters on their feet, clapping, cheering, and singing all of the songs. The better we are, the more excited the fans will be, so we must continue to produce for them to rejoice about.”
Goalscorer Nelson was another player whom Town’s away fans were delighted to shout about, as having come through the academy, they made it plain he was ‘one of their own’ from very early on, none more so than when he struck a first league goal.
Goal for the club, too. When he heard it sung from the away terrace, the teenager added: “There’s no better feeling than hearing the crowd sing your name, and I’m just looking to repay them.” Every time I step out onto the pitch, I am grateful for their support.”
