Tragedy as woman killed by falling tree branch while walking with children at Witton Park in Blackburn.

A woman was tragically killed by a falling tree branch while out walking with her children in Witton Park, Blackburn.

She was in her 30s and walking with her two children when a branch from a beech tree snapped and struck her shortly after 8.30pm on Monday (August 11).

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were dispatched to the park, but the woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Her children were reportedly unharmed during the tragic incident.

A spokesperson for the council responded: “Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has tragically died following an incident in Witton Park yesterday, when a large tree branch fell.”

Denise Park, chief executive of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, said: “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family and friends of the person who has died at this very difficult time.”

“Emergency services, including paramedics and the air ambulance, attended the scene. Council staff also supported by cordoning off the area to ensure public safety.

“As part of precautionary safety measures, the tree involved was being felled this morning.” Witton Park is a beloved community space, and we prioritise the safety of all visitors. “A cordon was put in place in the park, from the Buncer Lane entrance at Big Clover Wood to the Pavilion Café.

While this work is being done, we ask that visitors respect the cordons and follow the advice of the staff on site. “We understand that this news will be deeply upsetting for many in our community. Our thoughts are with the family at this very sad time.”

A spokesperson for the police confirmed: “We were called to Witton Park, Preston Old Road, Blackburn, at 8.33pm on August 11 following reports a woman had been struck by a falling tree branch.” Emergency personnel arrived and discovered the woman unresponsive.

Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, she was tragically declared dead on the scene. “Her death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner in due course.”
