Derby County 1 Charlton 1

Charlton’s unbeaten record now stands at four games after a dramatic 1-1 draw at Pride Park Stadium against Derby County.

James Bree maintained his blistering hot form, finishing off a fantastic team move in style to give the Addicks a first-half lead, but Matt Clarke scored with 11 minutes remaining to earn a point for the Rams. Both teams looked for a late victory, but the draw was arguably a fair result.

Nathan Jones made two changes from the side that defeated Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, with Macaulay Gillesphey getting his first start of the season in place of the injured Josh Edwards and Kayne Ramsay replacing Reece Burke, who dropped to the bench.

The home team started strong, and Amari’i Bell did well to read an early cut-back from the Rams, which could have resulted in a second-minute goal.

For the Addicks, Charlie Kelman had the first genuine chance, but his deflected drive from range was too close to Derby keeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.

Tyreece Campbell, who looked active, scared the home team by cutting inside his defender and hitting a ball wide of the net. Charlton seized the lead early on with a strike that could be the club’s best of the season.

Kelman did an excellent job of controlling the ball out of the air and finding Campbell on the left wing. The academy graduate then sent the ball back to Sonny Carey, who touched it into the path of Greg Docherty.

With his first touch, the Addicks captain smoothly set Bree up just inside the box, who volleyed powerfully back across goal with exquisite technique to score his second in as many games.

While the second half began with a pace and energy, neither team was able to generate anything. Zetterstrom blocked Kelman’s strike from just inside the area.

With 13 minutes remaining, Thomas Kaminski produced a fantastic stop to keep the Addicks ahead, anticipating well and diving swiftly to his right to deny Bobby Clark after the Derby midfielder controlled well to go through on goal.

Two minutes later, Clarke rose highest to head home Lewis Travis’ cross from their left, bringing Derby level.

Charlton nearly responded immediately, with Harvey Knibbs clearing the crossbar after an Addicks corner fell to him in the box.

Deep in stoppage time, the ball fell to Docherty in the Derby box, but his goalbound shot deflected off teammate Tanto Olaofe and went wide.

Nathan Jones’ side’s unblemished September comes to an end with the draw, and they face Preston North End on Saturday to kick off their October campaign.
