Unexpected crossover as Dwight Gayle helps former Newcastle United teammate sign for a new club
One of his former teammates has cited former Newcastle United player Dwight Gayle as the reason he chose to sign with a different team.
Some supporters like to observe how their former players are doing, even though the arrivals and the Alexander Isak story on Tyneside received a lot of attention.
Both Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson, two longtime players, left Newcastle United during the summer transfer window and have started well at Leeds United and West Ham United, respectively.
In recent months, other former players from long ago have also made intriguing moves. Alexander Mitrovic most recently moved from Al-Hilal to Al Rayyan in the Qatar Stars League.
Another player has now expressed gratitude to former Toon striker Dwight Gayle for persuading him to sign with Hibernian of the Scottish Premiership on deadline day.
After moving to Hibs, Dan Barlaser talks with Dwight Gayle, a former Newcastle player.
Rafa Benitez saw the potential in former Newcastle player Dan Barlaser during his tenure on Tyneside and gave him his first competitive start against Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
The midfielder, who was born in Gateshead, was loaned to Rotherham United, Accrington Stanley, and Crewe Alexandra. Eventually, Barlaser signed a permanent contract with the latter.
Barlaser has now been loaned to Hibs for the 2025–2026 season after spending two years at Middlesbrough. The 28-year-old said in an intriguing interview with Hibs TV that Gayle was the one who ultimately assisted him in determining the transfer was the correct one for him.
“This is my first time playing up here,” he remarked.
“But I thought I would give it a try because I know players who have and they say it’s amazing.”
“I used to play with Grant Hanley at Newcastle, and Dwight Gayle was also there. In fact, he texted me yesterday to tell me how much fun I would have and how wonderful the club was!
What Dwight Gayle is doing since his 2025 retirement announcement
With 34 goals in 113 league games, Gayle was an outstanding performer for Newcastle. The Magpies immediately returned to the Premier League thanks in large part to his goals during the 2016–17 Championship season.
The 35-year-old recently made news when he related a story about Steve Bruce, the former manager of Newcastle. Gayle criticized Bruce’s training regimen at Newcastle, prompting his former head coach to respond angrily.
Despite announcing his retirement from professional football in 2025, Gayle continues to play. Gayle declared in May that he was going to become a football agent because he thought his background would help younger players make better choices that would advance their careers.
Even though Gayle simply sent Barlaser a convincing SMS, this is an illustration of the job he has already begun to accomplish in football.
Gayle might potentially be able to convince a young player who shows promise to join Newcastle soon.
