‘Unsettled’ 20-goal striker withdraws from Premier League pre-season squad – wants Newcastle United move

Yoane Wissa, a transfer target for Newcastle United, has left Brentford’s preseason team in Portugal.

Newcastle United has expressed interest in Wissa this summer as Eddie Howe aims to add a striker to his roster while still holding onto top scorer Alexander Isak.

Isak is currently the only seasoned striker available to the Magpies after Callum Wilson was released. Although he hasn’t started a Premier League game for Newcastle, William Osula is another option for Howe.

With Hugo Ekitike joining Liverpool and Liam Delap and Joao Pedro joining Chelsea, Newcastle has also lost out on a number of top attacking targets this summer.

Wissa, who turns 29 in September, has one year remaining on his Brentford contract with a one-year extension option. He might therefore be available for less money, even though the Bees have stated that they would prefer not to sell Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo during the same transfer window.

Wissa was valued at about £40 million, while Mbeumo recently joined Manchester United for £71 million. Last season, Wissa scored 20 goals for Brentford across all competitions, including two against Newcastle.

The only Premier League player with more goals from open play than Wissa in the 2024–2025 season was Mohammed Salah.

Yoane Wissa leaves the Brentford team

Because of the uncertainty surrounding his future, Wissa has left Brentford’s training camp in Portugal, according to BBC Sport. According to the article, Wissa has been uneasy about the interest shown by teams like Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle’s interest in the DR Congo international is reportedly “accelerating,” and he is scheduled to speak with Brentford director of football Phil Giles about his future.

Yoane Wissa is amenable to joining Newcastle United.

Brentford is eager to reach a new agreement with Wissa as he enters the last year of his contract in order to safeguard their asset without having to exercise the contract option.

However, Wissa is refusing to entertain Brentford’s attempts to engage in new contract negotiations with him, preferring to look into his options elsewhere, according to a report from BBC Sport.

According to the report, reaching a personal agreement with Newcastle or Spurs “will not be an issue.”

Wissa’s future at the Gtech Community Stadium will be determined in large part by his meeting with Giles, Brentford’s director of football and a Newcastle admirer.

Eddie Howe gives the most recent Newcastle United transfer news.

Anthony Elanga, who cost £55 million to acquire from Nottingham Forest, is Newcastle’s only significant summer acquisition. Eddie Howe, the head coach, acknowledged that a number of targets left Newcastle this summer and that he would have preferred to have added more players at this point in the transfer window.

Howe stated following Saturday’s 4-0 loss to Celtic: “We definitely tried to do our business early, but it wasn’t to be. That was my wish.” I’d be very honest about the frustrating experience we’ve had losing targets to other clubs.

That has occurred multiple times. You simply must come to terms with it. I believe that for a transfer to be successful, the player must be really motivated to join your team; else, the transfer fails.

We’re looking for guys who can make the difference, are good enough, and are eager to join, but we can’t find many of them. To increase the depth of the score, we are sure we can attempt to bring in a few more players. Without a doubt, we know that we must, and we are making every effort to do so.
