‘We say no’ – petition is launched to save Lancs towns’ identities.
Burnley is not a suburb of Blackburn, according to the borough’s leader, who is urging locals to sign a petition against any new major local government that would include both towns.
Cllr Afrasiab Anwar spoke out as the document surpassed 1,100 signatures. The headline reads: “We say NO to Burnley and Pendle being merged with Blackburn.”
The petition comes as the government surveys on the future structure of local government in Lancashire following the county’s devolution, which could include a powerful elected mayor.
Ministers intend to cut the present 15 councils by creating fewer new major all-purpose bodies, which would see the unitary Blackburn with Darwen council, Lancashire County council, and Burnley district disappear.
Burnley Council Leader Cllr Anwar stated, “Let’s be honest, Burnley and Blackburn have never been shy about their rivalry.”
“Whether it’s football, tradition, cotton, or local pride, both communities have passionately defended their identities over generations.
“So, who exactly believes it’s a good idea to combine us into a single “super council”? Because it’s not the folks that live here.
