‘We’re now stronger’: Portsmouth boss John Mousinho details Michael Doyle’s new dual role in backroom reshuffle
‘We’re now stronger’: Portsmouth boss John Mousinho details Michael Doyle’s new dual role in backroom reshuffle.
The former Leeds and Sheffield United midfielder made 97 appearances for the Blues, scoring three times.
Michael Doyle has been assigned a dual coaching role following his emotional return to Fratton Park.
According to John Mousinho, the Irishman has taken over set-piece responsibilities from Joe Prodomo, who will now focus on his goalkeeping coaching.
The League Two title-winning skipper represents an expansion to the existing coaching set-up, with Mousinho keen to introduce more specialist roles to the Championship
And he’s delighted to have secured the 43-year-old for a third Pompey spell, having previously served as a popular player and then as the Academy’s assistant professional development phase coach under Sam Hudson.
‘We thought it would be beneficial for everyone’
Mousinho told The News: ‘As a football club, we don’t want to become too heavy or bloated as a staff, but we also want to try to reach Championship level.
‘There’s always something to do; probably everyone at the club right now has a job and a half, which is fantastic; everyone enjoys it.
However, this is an area where we could improve, and we believe it would benefit everyone.
“We didn’t need to get rid of anyone. We thought we could strengthen, make things better, and add someone with great coaching and playing experience.” Michael will serve as both first-team and set-piece coach. He had only been in the building since Friday, so the PEC Zwolle set-pieces were still split between Joe (Prodomo) and me.
‘Joe has done an excellent job over the last two and a half years that I’ve been here, taking all set-pieces and being a very dominant side. Especially in League One, where we scored a lot of goals.
‘As a Championship club, we want to specialise more. Nobody needs me to tell you about Michael’s career; I’m thrilled to have him on board, and I believe he will make a significant impact.
Appointed Pompey’s goalkeeping coach in June 2022
Danny Cowley appointed Prodomo as Blues goalkeeping coach in June 2022, after he previously worked in Bournemouth’s academy.
Mousinho was given set-piece responsibilities when he took over as head coach in January 2023, after impressing with his knowledge and organisation.
It proved to be a highly productive appointment, establishing a key strength in Pompey’s arsenal during the League One title-winning season, both offensively and defensively.
Mousinho has now delegated responsibility to Doyle, while Prodomo focusses solely on coaching a goalkeeping corps that includes Nicolas Schmid, Ben Killip, Jordan Archer, and Toby Steward.
Mousinho: ‘We now feel stronger’
Mousinho added: Joe has had a huge impact on the goalkeeping side; just look at the history of what we’ve done with goalkeepers in the last few years. ‘He improved Matt Macey, Will Norris, Nico, and other goalkeepers in our team.’
We discussed it with Joe, and we’re happy to have someone come in with that focus so that we can become slightly more specialised in that area.
