West Brom confirm signing of £1.5m international defender.

Albion have completed the signing of US international defender George Campbell from Montreal for a fee of approximately £1.5 million.

The Baggies beat out Championship rivals Stoke to sign the 24-year-old, who has signed a four-year contract at The Hawthorns. Campbell can play both right and centre back, and his versatility is thought to have appealed to Albion. He said, “I’m very excited to be here.

I honestly cannot wait to put on the boots and begin training. “When the opportunity to sign came, I wanted to take it and play football in Europe. I am ready to go.

“For me, the most important thing is to stay focused on the task at hand, which is to help the team win. Whatever challenges arise on the way, I’ll be prepared.” Campbell moved across the Atlantic as the Major League Soccer season approached its halfway point, and he has already made 16 appearances this season.

He was a product of Atlanta United’s youth academy and earned his first US cap in January in a 3-1 friendly victory over Venezuela. Albion sporting director Andrew Nestor said: “We are delighted to welcome George to the club. George brings significant first-team experience despite his young age.

“His progressive play, positional versatility, and physicality enhance our defensive unit, expanding our options.

“He has been in season since February and can now join our preseason at a critical time as we ramp up to our home opener.”
